An understanding of the main type of material used for pyramid tea bags

 

Pyramid tea bags are made of different packaging material. The materials differ in terms of look and feel (transparency) and environmentally friendliness. The four main types of material would be PLA mesh (raw material polylactic acid), PLA non woven, nylon and PET (polyester). In this article my objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of each type of pyramid tea bag packing material.

 
 
 
  • PLA Mesh (raw material polylactic acid)

This material is the most popular material in the market. It is eco friendly as it is biodegradable and projects a premium appearance. This packaging is suitable to pack leaf tea and flower tea. With the PLA Mesh you can visually see the tea or flower spreading in the bag, bringing in an exceptional experience in tasting the tea. It is advised to use the 0.09mm thickness PLA Mesh as it is more soft than other material.

 
 
 

When describing the PLA Mesh, we cannot ignore the importance of nongmo PLA which many people are now paying key attention to. Nongmo PLA is a pre-requisite now by many developed and mature markets such as Europe and America.   • PLA Nonwoven

Similar to the PLA mesh, the PLA nonwoven is made using the polylactic acid. However, the production process is different to the PLA mesh. In addition to this there are a few key differences of PLA nonwoven with the PLA mesh such as:

 

-It looks like the traditional filter paper

 

-It is not transparent

 

-It is suitable for tea with powder, as it can stop the powder from going into the tea

  • Nylon

Nylon is one of the most common material used and available in the market. While it is non-biodegradable it is a transparent material with the thickness being approximately 0.07-0.09mm. Similar to the PLA Mesh, with the nylon material, you can visually see the tea or flower spreading in the bag, bringing in an exceptional experience in tasting the tea. Many factories have been using this form of plastic material from many years back not only for tea bags, but for other food packaging purposes as well. Nylon can be considered as one of the key solutions in the packaging market that has a price advantage as opposed to PLA mesh.

 
 
 
  • PET (Polyester)

PET is a transparent non bio-degradable material for pyramid tea bags. The key difference PET has with nylon is that it got a higher sealing temperature. PET is a hard material which enables to keep a better shape after packaging as opposed to the other packaging material described above.
